When Ms.User Error Meets Hookah Papi, It Makes for a Great Therapy Session
Talkin' Outta Turn
I'm usually the jokester of the crew. You know, the one cracking jokes, talking sports, relationships, and whatever foolishness pops into my head. But lately, the conversations have been hitting different. Deeper. Realer. The kind of discussions that make you sit back and think about your own life.
The latest therapy session featured yours truly, Hookah Papi, and Ms. User Error.
It all started with a simple question:
What's the difference between a boyfriend/girlfriend and a partner?
To me, you graduate from boyfriend and girlfriend when the relationship becomes a true team effort. When it's no longer just dates, feelings, and cute pictures. It's when you're working together, building together, planning together. It's that unspoken understanding of:
"I got you, and you got me."
That's the stage where you're moving toward something greater. Possibly marriage. Possibly forever.
Hookah Papi had another take.
My guy said it happens when you start living together.
Now, I can't even say he's wrong. My boy A2 has always said the same thing. Living together is when the real interview begins. That's when all the habits, flaws, weird routines, and ugly truths come out.
Or maybe...
That's when you discover you've finally found the teammate you've been waiting for all along.
Then Ms. User Error opened an entirely different door.
She started talking about love languages and different relationship styles.
That conversation immediately took me down memory lane.
I remember talking to a woman I was seriously beginning to fall for. There was something I noticed in the relationship, and I wanted clarity. I wanted communication. I wanted to know how she felt about me. I wanted to understand her love language and share mine.
Instead?
The conversation got dodged.
Somehow I became the problem for bringing it up.
The topic got swept under the rug.
Fast forward months later and suddenly she wanted to have the exact same conversation.
You ever sit there wondering:
"Wait... didn't I bring this up already?"
Funny how that works.
That led Hookah Papi to make a point that hit home.
Why is it that sometimes you tell your partner something directly, but it doesn't become important until somebody else says it?
You've been saying it for months.
You've explained it three different ways.
You've practically made a PowerPoint presentation.
Then somebody outside the relationship says the exact same thing and suddenly it's gospel.
Now it's a fact.
Now it's worth discussing.
Now it makes sense.
Meanwhile, you're sitting there wondering if you've been speaking another language this whole time.
Ms. User Error dropped some wisdom on that too.
Sometimes communication breaks down because one partner is already anticipating the other's reaction before the conversation even starts.
Sometimes we build versions of people in our heads that don't actually exist.
We see them as perfect.
We ignore the flaws.
Then when those imperfections show up, we're shocked even though they've been there all along.
The truth is relationships aren't about finding perfect people.
They're about dealing with imperfect people honestly.
And sometimes that means having uncomfortable conversations.
The kind we'd rather avoid.
The kind that make us nervous.
The kind that expose vulnerabilities.
Before we wrapped up our unexpected therapy session, Ms. User Error left us with something positive.
Life doesn't stay hard forever.
Relationships don't improve through silence.
If you're trying to do life with someone, have the hard conversations.
Talk about the uncomfortable stuff.
Talk about expectations.
Talk about communication.
Talk about love languages.
Talk about the future.
And once you've talked about it...
Work on it.
Then work on it some more.
Because a partner isn't just somebody you love.
A partner is somebody willing to do the work alongside you.
And judging by this conversation, maybe we all need a little more therapy from Hookah Papi and Ms. User Error.
Just don't send me the bill.
One Positive Thing Before We Go...
One thing this conversation reminded me of is that healthy relationships are not built on perfection. They're built on growth.
Nobody walks into a relationship with all the answers. We all carry baggage, fears, communication habits, and lessons from past experiences. The key is finding someone who's willing to learn with you, grow with you, and have those uncomfortable conversations instead of avoiding them.
Sometimes communication will be messy.
Sometimes feelings will get misunderstood.
Sometimes you'll have to revisit a conversation more than once.
That's okay.
The goal isn't to agree on everything. The goal is to understand each other a little better each time.
If you're blessed enough to find someone who is willing to listen, learn, apologize, improve, and keep showing up, don't take that for granted. Those are the people worth building with.
Remember, relationships aren't about finding the perfect partner. They're about becoming better partners for each other.
Keep talking.
Keep listening.
Keep growing.
And most importantly, keep choosing each other, especially on the days when it's not easy.
Because real partnership isn't built during the good times.
It's built when two imperfect people decide they're still willing to put in the work together.
