They Said They Needed ESPN... Turns Out ESPN Needed Them #TalkinOuttaTurn
A couple months ago, I was choppin' it up with my homegirl about all the rumors floating around regarding Ryan Clark and Cam Newton and their situations with ESPN. I told her straight up, "They'll be aight." Why? Because in 2026, the game done changed.
Back in the day, if a network cut ties with you, that was supposed to be the end of the road. You got fired, canceled, pushed aside, and everybody thought your mic got turned off. But nowadays? The internet handed people their own station. Your phone is a studio. Your YouTube channel is a network. Your podcast is your own timeslot.
That's why I never looked at Ryan Clark or Cam Newton as dudes who needed ESPN to survive. They already built something for themselves.
Ryan got The Pivot with Channing Crowder and Fred Taylor. Cam got 4th & 1 With Cam Newton and the Funky Friday Podcast. These ain't little side hustles either. These platforms got real audiences, real influence, and more importantly, real ownership.
Now, there were rumors surrounding Ryan Clark's situation. Some people believed a mistaken report involving a college football player and an accident became a point of tension after Ryan had to publicly apologize. Others felt the network wasn't exactly thrilled with how aggressively he was building his own brand outside of television.
Whether those rumors are true or not, only the people inside those meetings know.
What I do know is this: Ryan Clark is still winning.
Matter of fact, he just leveled up. The NFL itself got involved in helping bring a bigger production around The Pivot Sports with Ryan Clark, which now streams live weekly on YouTube in partnership with NFL Films. Every Monday, Ryan, Channing Crowder, and Fred Taylor break down NFL games, storylines, and league drama for an
audience that keeps growing.
Think about that for a second.
Folks were worried about whether Ryan had a seat at somebody else's table.
Meanwhile, this man went out and built his own restaurant.
Cam Newton doing the same thing.
Every week he's dropping football commentary on 4th & 1, talking game strategy, player performances, and current NFL stories alongside co-host Omari "Peggy" Collins. Then he switches gears with Funky Friday, bringing in athletes, entertainers, musicians, and celebrities for honest conversations about fame, faith, life struggles, success, and culture.
That ain't just content.
That's a media ecosystem.
And that's where the real conversation starts.
Black Media Is In A Different Era
For years, Black culture drove conversations but didn't alw
ays own the platform where those conversations happened.
The barbershop debates.
The hood stories.
The sports takes.
The cultural commentary.
Corporate America would package it, monetize it, and sell it back to us.
Now we're witnessing something different.
Shows like:
- All The Smoke with Matt Barnes and Stephen Jackson
- It Is What It Is with Cam'ron and Mase
- Gil's Arena
- The Pivot
- 4th & 1
- Funky Friday
are proving that audiences want authenticity.
People are tired of polished corporate talking points.
They want the conversations that sound like the cookout.
The conversations from the corner store.
The conversations from the barbershop.
The conversations from the block.
The funny stories.
The unfiltered debates.
The cultural perspectives.
The realness.
And that's why these platforms keep growing.
Ownership Is The Real Championship Ring
One of the biggest lessons we've seen recently comes from Gilbert Arenas.
A lot of creators get offered big bags and immediately think they made it.
Sometimes that works.
Sometimes it don't.
Gil's Arena went through some turbulence after receiving major backing. There were reports of contractual disputes, business disagreements, scheduling conflicts, and pressure surrounding the direction of the show.
A lot of people thought the brand was cooked.
But here's where Gil did something important.
He stood on business.
More importantly, he stood on his IP.
The network situation changed.
The partnerships changed.
The cast changed.
But the one thing that mattered most stayed in his possession.
The brand.
The name.
The intellectual property.
Because he owned that, Gil's Arena was able to move forward with a new deal and continue growing under a different partnership structure.
That's a lesson every creator needs to write down.
Never get so excited by a check that you sign away your future.
Money is cool.
Ownership is cooler.
The New Black Media Gold Rush
What we're seeing right now feels a lot like the early days of hip-hop.
A lot of people don't realize they're witnessing history while it's happening.
We're seeing former athletes become executives.
We're seeing creators become networks.
We're seeing podcasters become media companies.
The next step isn't just having successful shows.
The next step is having successful infrastructure.
Production companies.
Distribution networks.
Advertising agencies.
Studios.
Ownership groups.
Streaming platforms.
The real power comes when the culture owns the pipeline.
Because when you own the pipeline, you don't need permission.
Final Message
Urban culture is entering a new media space, and we need to recognize the opportunity in front of us.
We can create.
We can produce.
We can distribute.
We can own.
The talent has never been the problem.
The conversation has never been the problem.
The audience has never been the problem.
Ownership has been the missing piece.
So while everybody's focused on who's getting fired, leaving networks, or switching platforms, pay attention to the bigger picture.
Ryan Clark.
Cam Newton.
Matt Barnes.
Stephen Jackson.
Cam'ron.
Mase.
Gilbert Arenas.
They're showing us something bigger than sports talk.
They're showing us what equity looks like.
Build the brand.
Protect the IP.
Own the platform.
Get the equity.
Because the goal ain't just to get a seat at somebody else's table.
The goal is to build our own network and decide who's eating.
Talkin' Outta Turn Message of the Day: Don't sell the rights to your dream for a quick bag. Ownership might take longer, but equity lasts longer than any paycheck. 💯🔥

Ownership is key 🔑!! Definitely made some valid points here
