RIP to the Music Video Era… or Nah? #Talkinouttaturn
🎬 Ayo, lemme talk my talk real quick. I just peeped a post on Say Cheese! Twitter and it hit me like a throwback BET countdown — music videos might be dead, y’all.
Now before you clutch ya pearls or start yellin’ “Nah, bruh, what about Ye’s visuals?” — hear me out.
Back in the day, music videos was events. Like, red carpet, popcorn ready, don’t call my house til it’s over type events. I’m talkin’ about when MJ dropped “Remember the Time” — bruh, I remember exactly where I was, what I was wearin’, and even what snacks I had. That video was a whole movie. Eddie Murphy, Magic Johnson, ancient Egypt vibes — it was cinematic royalty.
Then you had P. Diddy and Mase flyin’ around the globe in “Been Around the World” with J.Lo poppin’ up like a surprise guest at ya cookout. And don’t even get me started on the Mr. Biggs and R. Kelly saga — that was the hood’s version of Game of Thrones. We was tuned in like it was prime time TV.
But now? Man… videos feel like they got shot on somebody’s iPhone during lunch break. No dancers, no storyline, no budget — just vibes and a rented Airbnb. Everybody too cool to move, too chill to entertain. It’s like they allergic to choreography.
And the promo? Gone. No more “106 & Park,” no “TRL,” no “Making the Video.” Just YouTube drops and maybe a lil’ Vevo sprinkle if you lucky. BET Jams be tryin’, but it’s like throwin’ water on a grease fire — it ain’t enough.
I was choppin’ it up with some young artists recently, and they was like, “Videos don’t matter no more.” I had to hit ‘em with the OG wisdom: Videos used to be the soul of the song. They gave it life, context, flavor. You could watch a video and feel like you was part of the story.
Now, unless the artist got personality and real passion for their craft, the visuals be lookin’ like a slideshow with a beat. No shade, just facts.
So yeah, maybe music videos ain’t dead-dead… but they definitely on life support. Somebody call Timbaland, Missy, Hype Williams — we need a revival.
