🎤Yo, what’s good fam? So word on the block is BET just hit pause on both the Hip Hop Awards and the Soul Train Awards. Yeah, you heard that right. The two shows that been holdin’ it down for the culture—Suspend. And folks out here confused, mad, and straight up disappointed. These shows was more than just red carpets and performances… they was ours. The hood Grammys. The cookout on TV. The one time we all tuned in, tweeted wild, and argued over who rocked the best fit or who got snubbed.

🤔 So What Happened?

BET CEO Scott Mills said it’s part of a “media transformation.” 

Basically, they tryna reimagine the shows for this new digital era.

Ratings been slippin’, cable ain’t hittin’ like it used to, and they lookin’ at streamin’ platforms like BET+, YouTube, or maybe even Revolt to carry the torch.

But let’s be real—this ain’t just about numbers. 💯

It feel like a shift away from the culture that built BET in the first place. 🏚️

📺 Back in the Day…

We had shows like 106 & Park, Rap City, Hits from the Streets, Vita World—all them countdowns and VJs that kept us tapped in.
Now? All that got folded into generic music channels or apps.
No hosts, no vibes, no connection. Just playlists and algorithms.
It’s like they forgot how important that face-to-face energy was. AJ & Free, Big Tigger, Terrence & Rocsi — those folks was family.

🏆 Let’s Talk Awards…

Every year, we seen certain female rappers winnin’ with no real music out. 

No shade, but it started feelin’ like politics over talent.

Meanwhile, legends and underground artists barely got a nod. 

But still… the Hip Hop Awards been gettin’ better lately.

🔥 Cyphers? Fire.

💐 Tributes? Heartfelt.

🎭 Performances? Iconic.

So why kill the momentum now?! 

🧠 What’s the Move?

Viacom owns BET, so maybe they tryna push music content to MTV or Revolt.

Maybe they plannin’ a new wave of award shows. 

But if that’s the case, they better respect the roots. 

Give flowers to the OGs.

Celebrate the new wave and the pioneers.

And don’t lock it behind paywalls or “Plus” apps.

We ain’t tryna subscribe to five different platforms just to see our people shine.

These shows was moments of unity.
Family sittin’ around the TV, group chats blowin’ up, social media goin’ crazy.
It was our time.
And now it’s feelin’ like the culture gettin’ pushed to the sidelines.
